The "Gondola" was invented circa 1771 in Paris and seated up to a dozen passengers. Later, the omnibus (created circa 1820-1830) carried several passengers just as omnibuses today carry many passengers. Mr. Harvey, of London, modified the two-wheel cart in 1844 so that his "Tribus" was similar to an omnibus in that it carried three passengers.

The Tribus driver sat at the rear of the cart, elevated to the level of the roof of the Tribus. The driver's seat was at the right, with the passenger seat at the rear, at the driver's left side. Thus the driver could open the door while remaing seated. The Tribus was powered by one horse, but Mr. harvey also invented the "Curricle Tribus", powered by two horses.
